KIEL CANAL TRANSIT

June 15, 2008.  The world's busiest artificial waterway, almost 100 kilometers long.  Using the Kiel Canal instead of going around the Jutland Peninsula saves 250 nautical miles.

                   

         

    

The canal is very narrow in places as you can see by the first photo.  Traffic consists of many different kinds of boats.

                   

         

 

Last lock connecting the Baltic Sea with the North Sea.  The photo sequence shows the lock being opened.
